Test Prep with Yoga and Mindfulness

Studying for tests – regardless of whether they are state-sponsored tests, career tests such as the GMAT or LSAT, or just your typical lesson review test – is stressful and can produce high levels of anxiety among students. And when the actual test is being taken, there is a very real risk of your students developing brain fatigue and test scores dipping as the day continues.

The same yoga and mindfulness activities you use with your students during a typical day can also help them ease into a calmer state of mind for studying or test taking. Research also shows that engaging in similar activities while studying as when taking the test can lead to higher mental recall and better overall testing scores.

A great way to approach any studying session or test is to do so as if you were taking a yoga class. Start with a simple breathing exercise to calm and center the mind, and chase away competing thoughts. We have some great videos for breathing activities on www.amazenu.com. During the test or study time, pause to lead your class through a few gentle twists or arm and shoulder stretches. This will help the body stay comfortable and not cramp during long periods of sitting. Do these gentle stretches after each hour or when you shift from one subject to another. Upon completion of testing or studying, lead your class through another breathing/mindfulness activity to quiet the brain and reconnect it with the body. You can also try a seated savasana where everyone sits upright with their eyes closed and quietly meditates.

Don’t forget to wish your students “Good luck!”

amaZEN U has more than 100 yoga and mindfulness videos, all available for a monthly or yearly subscription. Subscriptions start at just $9/month. Visit www.amazenu.com.
